Contract number: 91990024C0010

Purpose

New forms of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) offer promise in education for personalizing teaching and learning. In previous projects supported by ED/IES SBIR awards and other sources, the team developed the CGScholar writing system. In this project the team will develop a prototype of CGScholar with an AI helper, a new web software application that will employ GenAI to offer real-time feedback as students write texts.

Project Activities

The project team will develop a new prototype component that integrates GenAI within CGScholar to offer formative and summative feedback to students based on their use of non-textual media such as images, audio, or video, while writing. At the end of Phase I, a pilot study will occur with 4 middle and high school classes, with approximately 80 students using the prototype to write 500-word essays. The team will examine whether the prototype functions as intended, whether students perceive that the GenAI provided timely, helpful, and accurate feedback during the writing process, what protocols and guardrails are required for the effective and safe application of GenAI in the teaching of writing, and whether educators find GenAI useful for writing instruction.
