Developing and Evaluating Tools for Communicating Statistical Evidence to Education Decision-Makers

NCER
Program: Statistical and Research Methodology in Education
Program topic(s): Core
Award amount: $899,973
Principal investigator: Elizabeth Tipton

Northwestern University
Year: 2024
Project type:
Methodological Innovation
Award number: R305D240023

Purpose

This project will develop and rigorously test new visualizations of statistical and scientific information for use in evidence clearinghouses. There are many education clearinghouses, including the What Works Clearinghouse, Evidence for ESSA, Blueprints for Healthy Youth Development, and the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). These clearinghouses share an interest in (a) determining which programs have strong evidence, (b) synthesizing the findings of these studies, and (c) sharing this information in ways that are clear, relevant, and trustworthy. Statisticians and methodologists have developed and disseminated a wide range of methods for (a) and (b). This project contributes to (c) - to ensuring that the methods for visualizing and communicating research findings to education decision-makers are equally rigorous and evidence-based.

Project Activities

This project includes three aims. For the first aim, hypotheses regarding new data visualizations are tested via online randomized experiments. In the second aim, new visualizations are developed based upon information collected during interviews with clearinghouse users. For the third aim, new visualizations are tested using online experiments, including using a nationally representative panel survey.

Products and publications

Products: The project will result in new visualizations of both statistical and contextual data that have been rigorously tested with education decision-makers for use in research clearinghouses. Results of studies will be presented in journal articles, conference presentations, and workshops. The project's new visualizations will be made available through free software (an R package) and case studies. A white paper focused on clearinghouses with specific recommendations will accompany these. The visualizations developed will be immediately useful to research clearinghouses for use in their materials. These will also be useful for applied researchers seeking better ways to present findings of meta-analyses to audiences of education decision-makers.
