Development of an Online, Multi-Challenge Platform that can Host Multiple K-12 Engineering Design Challenge Competitions Simultaneously

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $55,481
Project director: Deanne Bell
Awardee:
Future Engineers, LLC
Year: 2016
Award period: 5 months (05/01/2016 - 10/31/2016)
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: EDIES16C0002

Purpose

The project team developed and tested a prototype of an online platform to facilitate engineering project challenges within K–12 classrooms across many schools. The prototype included a content management platform to enable a high volume of challenges for students to conduct projects on a broad range of STEM topics, such as computer coding, digital modeling, or producing simulations. In a pilot study with one school at the end of Phase I, research demonstrated that the prototype functioned as planned, that teachers were able to incorporate challenges within instruction practice, and multiple classrooms were able to participate in a challenge and produce a product in response to a challenge.
