The First Intelligent Wearable Device to Enhance Student Attention Through Personalized Self-Monitoring and Reinforcement

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $148,573
Project director: Richard Brancaccio
Awardee:
Fokus Labs
Year: 2017
Award period: 6 months (05/01/2017 - 10/31/2017)
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: EDIES17C0047

Purpose

With this Phase I funding, the project team will develop and test a prototype of a hardware and web-based social and behavioral intervention to improve self-regulation (SR) of students in grades 3 to 5. The prototype will include a wearable wristband that gently vibrates from time to time during the school day to prompt students to indicate their level of SR (e.g. level of focus, attention, self-control). The prototype will also include a game-based intervention to facilitate improved SR, a back-end data system to capture data, and a dashboard for students and teachers to track levels of SR over time. At the end of Phase I in a pilot study with 60 students (grades 3 to 5) in six classrooms, the researchers will examine whether the prototype functions as planned, if students understand and can use the feedback provided by the wristband to make decisions about their level of SR, and how teachers use information from the dashboard to inform instructional practice on individual students.
