Foundational Reading Skill Exercises for English Language Learners

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $200,000
Project director: Yevgen Borodin
Awardee:
Charmtech Labs LLC
Year: 2019
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: 91990019C0024

Purpose

In a prior project, the team developed an online platform that hosts content from any book or digital source and then generates automated supports (e.g., highlighted text, read alouds, embedded dictionary) to support comprehension as students read content. In this project, the team will develop a prototype of a component of this platform designed to support English Learners in reading texts in English

Project Activities

The prototype will assess student reading comprehension for required course content and provide personalized formative assessment feedback with instructional cues for improving performance. In the Phase I pilot research with 50 high school aged English Learners, the team will examine whether the prototype functions as planned and whether students are able to read passages and use the results to improve their performance as they progress.
