Higher Learning @ Higher Speeds in Biosciences using Time Compressed Animated Delivery (TCAD)

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $836,000
Project director: Phillip L. Senger
Awardee:
Current Conceptions, Inc.
Year: 2008
Project type:
Fast Track
Contract number: ED008CO0050

Purpose

This project will develop and evaluate the Time Compressed Animated Delivery (TCAD), consisting of short (10 to 15 minutes), highly animated, and information-rich units to teach the reproductive sciences. The content can be delivered in approximately half of the time required by traditional lecture methods. Thus, the overall goal of this project is to produce "Higher Learning @ Higher Speeds". The TCAD will be designed to educate college students about core biologic principles with a focus on how these principles impact personal reproductive health. The TCAD topics will include: Ovarian Follicular Dynamics, the Menstrual Cycle and Hormonal Contraception, Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART), and Mechanisms of Erectile Dysfunction and Menopause and Hormonal Replacement Therapy.

Project Activities

TCAD will be developed using the following steps: 1) developing the storyboard and script, 2) transforming 2-D graphics into step-animations, 3) designing and producing 3-D anatomical reconstructions coupled with streaming animation, 4) integrating the voice-over (audio) component with the visual presentation and 5) formatting the TCAD prototype for viewing via website or DVD presentation. Following, the team will develop the modules. In order to assess feasibility and usability, and to gather data on potential efficacy, the interventions will be used as a supplement to the reproductive physiology courses at 7 Land Grant Universities. Outcome measures will be in the form of items from course exams. Observational data will also be collected.
