Purpose

In this project, the team will develop and test HOL Advisor to support teachers and leaders to deliver evidence-based literacy instruction through tech enabled teaching tools and predictive insights for teaching, learning and professional development. This platform will provide teachers with student data, instructional plans, implementation recommendations, training materials, and progress tracking tools in one user-friendly interface. The focus will initially be on Kindergarten-Grade 2 (K-2), with future iterations designed for later grades.

Project Activities

HOL Advisor aims to provide just-in-time, day-to-day support to teachers and literacy leaders, addressing the challenges they face in implementing evidence-based reading instruction. While other tech solutions exist, none offer the same level of tailored support. HILL has already developed components such as Continuum and Expertise within its HILL Online framework to support literacy instruction, assessment, and implementation. HOL Advisor will integrate these components and leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance recommendations and support in the future. The goal is to provide quality support to teachers and improve student literacy rates at an affordable cost.

The project will be implemented in phases, starting with the investigation of challenges faced by teachers and literacy leaders in teaching reading. The solution will be developed and tested through iterations and a pilot program. The team behind HOL Advisor includes key personnel with expertise in education and technology. Additionally, partnerships with research organizations and school districts have been established to ensure the effectiveness of the solution.

Key outcomes

HOL Advisor will provide, in one user-friendly interface, a new web-based dashboard that will help teachers (a) understand their students' current reading abilities, (b) connect assessment data to programming recommendations, (c) provide access to professional learning materials and resources to implement those plans with fidelity, and (d) track student progress and intervention effectiveness and (e) the degree to which users follow and use recommended activities. The focus for the current prototype will be K-2 because these are foundational years for literacy development. Future iterations will be designed and tested for later grades.
