Project Activities
The project team will develop a new prototype component of an AI and NLP engine that analyzes oral responses, with sensitivity to the voices of EL students. In the prototype, students will be assigned to activities in StoryWorld based on the automated assessment of their oral responses. The prototype will also include a dashboard that presents educators information on students' progress toward English proficiency. At the end of Phase I, the team will conduct a pilot study with 5 kindergarten to grade 2 educators and 10 ELs per educator over 4 weeks. They will examine if the prototype was feasible for classroom use, if the AI/NLP generated recommendations for student activities, if educators agreed about the appropriateness the recommendations for the individual students, if students were able to navigate content, and if the prototype showed promise for increasing oral reading fluency and comprehension.
