Methods Training Using Single-Case Designs

NCSER
Program: Research Training Programs in Special Education
Program topic(s): Methods Training for Special Education Research
Award amount: $699,936
Principal investigator: Wendy Machalicek
Awardee:
University of Oregon
Year: 2016
Award period: 4 years (07/01/2016 - 06/30/2020)
Project type:
Training
Award number: R324B160034

Purpose

The goals of the professional development course were to improve (1) the methodological rigor of SCD intervention research, (2) the teaching of SCD methods in higher education settings, and (3) the visual and statistical analysis of SCD data by special education and early intervention researchers. Over the past decade, there have been a number of advances in SCD intervention research, including developments in research design, visual and statistical analysis, and methods for summarizing single-case intervention research in literature reviews. This project developed, implemented, and evaluated an intensive professional development course in single-case design (SCD) research.

Project Activities

During this project, the SCD Institute team engaged in the following activities:

  1. Developed an SCD Institute training curriculum covering such topics as visual and statistical analysis, randomization options, effect size measurement, and meta-analysis
  2. Recruited, selected, and supported 106 SCD Institute trainees
  3. Held three training institutes, each as a 4.5-day session, during the summers of 2017, 2018, and 2019
  4. Disseminated SCD methods material through a project website (https://singlecaseinstitute.uoregon.edu/) that hosts online course modules, archived Institute materials and resources, and visual analysis software (all developed during the project period)
  5. Consulted with Institute trainees on the development of SCD grant applications
  6. Evaluated the Institute, project website, and training materials annually
  7. Provided information to IES and discussed with them how to improve the What Works Clearinghouse standards for evaluating evidence from SCDs

Key outcomes

The key outcomes of this project, as reported by the principal investigator, are as follows: Each SCD Institute was evaluated to inform continuous improvement and suggested high satisfaction with the faculty, training content, and training formats employed. Following the Institutes, trainees reported increased grant application submissions, peer-reviewed publications, and professional presentations involving SCD research, as well as teaching more university courses in SCD methods.
