Oko: A Multimodal Intelligent Assistant for Small Group Collaborative Learning in Elementary Math

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $250,000
Project director: Matt Miller
Awardee:
Oko Labs, Inc.
Year: 2023
Award period: 8 months (06/23/2023 - 02/23/2024)
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: 91990023C0028

Purpose

Research demonstrates that small group learning can promote student engagement, motivation, problem-solving skills, and even social-emotional competencies including communication, collaboration, and empathy. During previous research and development, the team developed a website to enable small groups of students to collaborate in solving math puzzles. The purpose of this project is to develop a new prototype to better support educators in delivering and managing this intervention to small groups in a classroom setting.

Project Activities

In Phase I, the project team  will develop a new prototype of a classroom intervention to support educators in coordinating small group activities as students collaborate in solving math puzzles and also support their peers in areas of social-emotional learning. The prototype will leverage vision technologies and natural language processing technologies to personalize learning by providing insights to educators who are overseeing multiple groups simultaneously. At the end of Phase I, a pilot study will include 6 upper elementary educators and 150 students. Researchers will examine if the prototype functions as intended, if educators are able to implement the intervention as a part of regular classroom practice, if students' attitudes towards math and their social emotional skills increase in a pre-to-post survey, and if students increase in learning fractions increasing from a pre- to- post assessment.
