Purpose

The new Pathways training program at California State University, Sacramento (Sacramento State) is designed to provide upper-level undergraduates and master's level students with experiences in conducting education research while preparing participants for doctoral study.

Project Activities

The interdisciplinary training program is open to students across Sacramento State and includes faculty from the College of Education and the Departments of Ethnic Studies and Public Policy and Administration. Over the course of the five-year grant, Sacramento State will offer up to 60 students one-year Pathways fellowships.

The training program's theme is "Pathways: Successful Transitions To and Through Higher Education." As part of the year-long training program, fellows will receive training in education research, conduct research with faculty mentors, and receive assistance in applying to doctoral programs. One core feature of the fellowship is the summer research apprenticeship in which fellows will gain experience at a policy research center (Campaign for College Opportunity, Institute of Social Research, Public Policy Institute of California, WestED) or with their faculty mentor on a research project related to the program theme.

For participation in the training program, each fellow will receive a summer research apprenticeship stipend, an allowance for meals during the summer apprenticeship, and a small allowance for travel to research apprenticeship sites.

Increasing Diversity in the Education Sciences

A primary purpose of all Pathways training programs is to help increase diversity in the Education Sciences. As a Minority Serving Institution (Hispanic Serving and Asian American, Native American, and Pacific Islander Serving), Sacramento State has a diverse student population from which to recruit Pathways fellows. While the Sacramento State program is open to all juniors, seniors, and masters students who meet the program's requirements, the University will specifically recruit students typically underrepresented in the education sciences, as well as students from a wide variety of academic disciplines (Education, Public Policy, Sociology, Government, Psychology, Anthropology, Women's Studies, Ethnic Studies, History) and teacher preparation programs.
