Phase I Development
Contract number: 91990024C0014

Purpose

Many students struggled with academic learning and engagement after the global pandemic ended, with figures demonstrating that approximately half of students described themselves as not engaged or actively disengaged. Through prior self-funded research and development, this development team created rapStudy, an education technology program that recreates popular songs with educational lyrics, to engage students in learning while listening to their favorite music. In this project, the team will develop an artificial intelligence (AI) song generator for students and educators to create songs with lyrics to learn academic content in English language arts (ELA) classes.

Project Activities

The project team will develop a new prototype component of rapStudy. This component will include a dashboard for students to select a song by any artist and to upload their educational notes and an AI engine that automatically replaces the original lyrics with the student notes resulting in a new song. At the end of Phase I, the project team will conduct a pilot study with 3 educators and 100 students in grade 4 over a period of 2 weeks. They will examine the usability of the prototype, whether educators believe the prototype is feasible to use when integrated with regular practice within the allotted time, if the using prototype is feasible for classroom use, to what extent teachers utilize the prototype to prepare for and conduct classroom lessons, and whether students are engaged around ELA concepts.
