Regenerative Reading Assessments

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $250,000
Project director: Yury Puzis
Awardee:
Charmtech Labs LLC
Year: 2024
Award period: 8 months (05/01/2024 - 01/02/2025)
Project type:
Phase I Development
Contract number: 91990024C0011

Purpose

Research shows that when students struggle to read, the best course of action is to use a diagnostic assessment and then plan interventions for students that build the deficient reading skills. In a previous project funded through the IES Reading for Understanding Research Initiative, ETS created the ReadBasix assessment, and through ED/IES SBIR contracts in 2021 and 2022, Charmtech built the Capti Assess platform to develop, administer, and bring assessments to market. In this project, the team will develop a new prototype component of Capti Assess employing generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to automatically create new ReadBasix items with minimal human effort.

Project Activities

The project team will develop a prototype GenAI engine integrated with Capti Assess to regenerate and expand the ReadBasix item-pool, increases its selection of topics and will ensure that its items stay culturally relevant and secure. The resulting prototype will enable educators to quickly generate localized and curriculum assign assessments from their own curricula. At the end of Phase I, the researchers will conduct a pilot study with 4 middle school English language arts teachers, 2 psychometricians, and 40 students. They will evaluate the tool's usability of the feasibility; if students are engaged being assessed with new items; whether educators are able to create items, manage, and administer them; and whether educators understand the psychometric reports.
