Representing and Combining the Results of Randomized Experiments in Education

NCER
Program: Statistical and Research Methodology in Education
Program topic(s): Core
Award amount: $469,214
Principal investigator: Larry Hedges
Awardee:
Northwestern University
Year: 2008
Project type:
Methodological Innovation
Award number: R305U080002

Purpose

The multi-site randomized experiment is an important tool in education science, but the use of evidence from such trials has sometimes posed technical problems. The results from this research project will make it easier to interpret, represent, and use the results of randomized experiments in education.

Project Activities

The outcomes provide after-the-fact adjustments (approaching corrections) to reported results where the original researcher has failed to take into account the effect of clustering on the precision of estimates used in significance testing, and calculations of power and intervention effect sizes. The adjustments vary by a variety of factors, including the actual clustering, the nature of the dependent variable, and the hierarchical nature of the research design.
