Supplemental information

The purpose of this project was to support IES' goal to encourage the scaling of effective research and development investments via commercialization. As a result of the project, SRI International authored From Research to Market: Development of a Transition Process to Integrate Sustainable Scaling Methodologies into Education Innovation Research Design and Development (see full citation below).

To begin, SRI conducted a brief scan of extant literature on best practices in scaling research-based innovations across a wide range of sectors. Then, with the help of a standing Advisory Council of four members and a set of expert panelists—including IES principal investigators with experience scaling their innovations, venture capitalists, and district leaders—SRI adapted the "invent-apply-transition" (I-A-T) framework to the education research use-case. Finally, SRI developed a simple tool that details a parsimonious set of screening criteria that would allow IES to select current and/or former grantees whose evidence-based educational interventions are likely candidates for effective scaling using the I-A-T process identified in the report.
