The Social Shape Up System

NCER
Program: Small Business Innovation Research
Award amount: $900,000
Project director: Lynn Singletary
Awardee:
Teaching Research Institute, LLC
Year: 2011
Project type:
Phase II Development
Contract number: EDIES11C0043

Purpose

Research demonstrates that prosocial behaviors (cooperating, helping, and sharing) in early grade school predict later academic achievement, whereas anti-social behaviors (verbally inappropriate, aggressive, uncooperative) predict poor achievement and deviance. Along with instructing students on the course content, teachers are responsible for guiding students in areas of socio-emotional development. This project will develop a classroom conduct system that includes a mechanism for teachers to monitor social behavior and progress.

Project Activities

In Phase I the team developed a prototype of the product and tested its feasibility in 10 classrooms. Results demonstrated that teachers found the product to be easy to use and that it could be incorporated within regular instruction without issue. Phase I also provided data that the research team will use to iteratively refine the product. Phase II development will focus on refining the scripting language, the database management system, and the HTML pages to provide both data processing and input/output presentation functions. All basic aspects of the product will be iteratively tested, such as the user access control, the monitoring behaviors functions, the classroom reporting functions, and system use monitoring and management functions such as the class scales management and the daily and weekly data entry status. In order to assess feasibility and usability, and to gather data on the promise of the product to track and support improvements in student behavior, pilot research will test the product with 30 teachers over a two month period. Half of the teachers will use the product whereas half will not. Analyses will examine students across several areas of socio-emotional competence.
