This partnership engaged district leaders in West Virginia’s Logan County and their community partners at the Education Alliance to improve students’ mathematics achievement in all of the district’s middle schools (grades 5 to 8). These partnership members recognized the need for a comprehensive approach that harnesses educators, community partners, and family engagement specialists to provide aligned and evidence-based support for students’ mathematics learning across multiple environments, including in-school, afterschool, and at-home settings. To achieve this goal, REL Appalachia staff engaged in a project that aimed to strengthen mathematical mindsets (mathematics attitudes and mathematical habits of mind) through improved use of evidence-based instructional practices as well as inclusive family engagement strategies.

Completed Projects
This coaching project built the knowledge and capacity of school-based teams to promote mathematical mindsets in Logan County, West Virginia. The professional learning opportunities that REL staff and district and Education Alliance partners co-designed and implemented included opportunities for participants to learn and reflect on their use of evidence-based instructional practices for building mathematical mindsets and inclusive family engagement strategies and integrate the use of such practices and strategies across multiple touchpoints—in middle school classrooms, in afterschool programs, and at home.
