The file contains the existing NCES locale codes (metro-centric) and new locale codes (urban-centric) for 100,593 public schools. The new urban-centric locale codes follow the same logic as the older locale codes, but incorporate an approach that prioritizes population size and proximity to an urbanized area in assigning locale.
