Summary
This publication allows policymakers, researchers, education agencies, and the public to examine the current status of the curricula being offered in public and non-public high schools. It also presents the courses being taken by students and the relationships between course-taking patterns and grade 12 performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress in the subjects of reading, writing, and civics. The high school transcripts of students who graduated between January 1, 1998 and November 21, 1998 are included. The study was conducted in the summer and fall of 1998, and included 25,422 students graduating from 264 American high schools. The sample of schools is nationally representative of all schools in the United States, and the sample of students is representative of graduating seniors from each school.
