Summary

Using the NCES Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS), a cross-sectional teacher cost index is developed. Because teachers represent a substantial proportion of the budget of school districts, the TCI is a major step forward in the development of a geographic cost-of-education index (CEI) for states, counties, and school districts. The TCI also considers amenities of living and working in a location, as well as cost of living.
