Summary

This report presents the findings of the first national survey of public libraries on the services and resources available to children. Survey items include the availability of library resources and services to children, the usage of library services by children, the number of group programs at the library for children and child care-givers, the amount of library cooperation with schools and with preschools or day care centers, and the number and educational level of public service and children's librarians. In March 1989 questionnaires were mailed to a national probability sample of 846 public libraries. The report will be distributed to survey respondents and library associations. This survey on children's services will complement the survey on young adult services (released in July 1988) to be used at the White House Conference on Libraries and Information Science.
