Summary

This is the final report on a study of factors associated. with dropping out of high school. In this study, the influences of personal and family background attributes, economic and locational factors, educational experiences, and student behaviors are examined in relation to the decision to leave high school before' graduation. It also gives special attention to intergroup differences, attempting to sort out the factors responsible for disparities between male and female and among white, black, and Hispanic dropout rates. These analyses, which employ descriptive statistics and the multivariate: event-history methods, are based on data from the initial and first follow-up rounds of the High School and Beyond (HS&B) survey of the sophomore class of 1980.
