In the fall of 1996 almost 46 million students were enrolled in more than 86 thousand public schools. This report gives national and state information about the numbers, types, size and location of schools, and school districts. It includes the percent of students in each of five racial/ethnic groups, those receiving special education, and those who are eligible for free lunch, and dropout data for selected states.
