The Persistence of Employees Who Pursue College Study

This Stats in Brief uses data from the base year and first follow-up surveys of the 1995-96 Beginning Postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study to examine the persistence and completion rates of students who define themselves primarily as "employees who decided to enroll in school." These "employees who study" were found to have persistence rates similar to those of other students when their goal did not involve obtaining a postsecondary credential, or when their goal was to obtain a postsecondary certificate. Among those seeking an associate's degree or higher degree, however, "employees who study" had lower persistence rates than their peers. Differences in the backgrounds and life situations of "employees who study" may help account for these differences in persistence.
