Finding the Right Starting Point: Obtaining, Interpreting, and Evaluating International Transcripts

REL Northwest
Author(s):
Mary Martinez-Wenzl
Publication date:
September 2017

Summary

This infographic was developed to describe how to evaluate foreign transcripts through a three-step process: obtaining and (if necessary) translating the transcript; interpreting how a student's previous coursework correlates with local coursework; and determining which credits will be transferred in and which courses the student will need to take. Clear and consistent transcript interpretation and evaluation can help ensure that newcomer English learner students are provided with an educational program that gives them the opportunity to earn a regular high school diploma within a reasonable length of time and that allows them to be competitive in meeting U.S. college entrance requirements.
