Maximizing Reading Interventions in Alaska

REL Northwest
Author(s):
Caitlin Scott
Publication date:
May 2026

Summary

REL Northwest developed this factsheet for Alaska’s Department of Early Education and Development (DEED) to share with Alaska districts and educators on using reading interventions to strengthen reading instruction and improve student achievement. Based on WWC Practice Guides in literacy, it outlines five steps for implementing effective interventions and includes a quick self-check to assess whether key supports are in place.

AK DEED supports districts in implementing the state’s Reads Act and providing effective reading instruction. The law requires districts to screen students in kindergarten through third grade and provide reading interventions to students who struggle.
