REL Southeast has provided technical support to the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) and three district partners through a training and coaching project, Implementing High-Quality Instruction and Assessment for English Learners through Evidence-Based Coaching Practices. In this project, principals and instructional coaches learn how to collect data using Alabama’s High-Quality Instruction and Assessment (HQIA) Classroom Observation Tool (COT) and provide evidence-based feedback to teachers to support their practice.
This infographic is the first in a series of five that REL Southeast and ALSDE are developing based on actual events that occurred during this training and coaching work. This first infographic focuses on Student-Centered Engagement, one of the five HQIA practices that educators in Pell City Schools implemented during this project. The remaining four infographics will each focus on one of the other HQIA practices.
During the project, as teachers were implementing HQIA in their classrooms, the REL Southeast, EL Regional Specialists, and a principal and/or instructional coach observed the lesson using the HQIA COT. These classroom practices and a post-observation dialogue were captured through illustrated vignettes featured in the infographic series. These resources serve as short, illustrated primers that can be used in professional learning activities to help principals and coaches see what each of the HQIA practices look like in the classroom and support teachers with honing their skills.
REL Southeast would like to acknowledge and thank our partners at ALSDE, Pell City Schools, Jasper City Schools, Enterprise City Schools, and especially the dedicated teachers in these districts who have granted us the opportunity to showcase their work.
