Summary

When students are placed in remedial education upon entering college, their college journey can be delayed; however, high school transition courses have shown promise in reducing the need for remedial education. Transition courses are typically full-year, high school, credit-bearing courses taken by students who are at risk of being placed into remedial courses when they enroll in college. They are offered in 39 states, 17 of which have statewide transition curricula. This infographic provides data on the prevalence of underpreparedness for college among high school students and provides links to specific examples of transition courses across the U.S., as well as studies of their effectiveness.
