What is the Education Logic Model (ELM) Application? add remove

ELM is a downloadable, browser-based application for Mac and PC that runs locally on your computer and does not require an active internet connection. The program guides you through a series of questions, giving you the opportunity to enter your program resources, activities, outputs, and outcomes. Once all of your program information is entered, you will be prompted to draw color-coded lines between each component, illustrating their cause-and-effect relationships. The end result is a printable logic model which functions as a map for you and your team, visually connecting intended activities with intended outputs and outcomes.

Program Features:

  • The easy, wizard-like interface will walk you through building your logic model, step by step.
  • All information is stored locally on your computer, and the data can be easily shared by generating a PDF in the Print Options window, or by sharing the ".rel" model file with other ELM users.
  • Contains an ELM Application User Guide with full instructions and logic model examples.
Why Create a Logic Model of Your Education Program? add remove

Logic models are an invaluable tool for teachers, administrators, policy makers and evaluators to visually represent the structure, process, and goals of a program, both conceptual and actionable. Logic models can contribute to the success of your program in the following ways:

  • Make the intention behind your program clear.
  • Introduce common language and references for collaborators in your program.
  • Define resources and outlining activities, as in an action plan.
  • Show quantitative outputs as well as short-, mid-, or long-term effects.
  • Use a visual display as a proven and effective learning tool.
  • Illustrate the process of your program, speaking to its value beyond the measurable effects.
  • Use theories of change to guide the planning process, making lessons learned more evident in the evaluation stage.

In the video below, listen to Dr. Salu Hunkin-Finau's experience of implementing the Education Logic Model application in school districts in American Samoa and how the app is being used in the territory.

Installation

  1. Click on the Download Now button below to download a zipped folder of the ELM application.
  2. Open your Downloads folder and locate the downloaded file, ELM.zip.
  3. Unzip the application into the desired location on your hard drive. Please note: it is imperative to extract the files/folder from the zipped folder before the ELM application can be fully launched. If your network is security protected, you may need to contact your IT support to implement a program like 7-Zip Portable or a similar file compression utility tool.
  4. Once decompressed, locate and open the UNZIPPED folder, and proceed to double-click the "index.html" file to launch the application. The application will not work properly if the "index.html" file in the ELM zipped folder is used to launch the application.
  5. When the logic model has been completed and saved, you can re-open your saved .rel file to make further changes.

For convenience, consider either bookmarking the home page of the application or adding a program shortcut on your desktop. In Windows, right-click the "index.html" file and choose "Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)." On a Mac, simply highlight the text in the address bar and drag it to the desktop.

Browser Configuration

ELM will run on Firefox, Chrome and Safari without special configuration.
