Getting to Know Pacific Island Students from the Freely Associated States (Infographic Series)

REL Pacific
Publication date:
January 2021

Summary

Pacific peoples have traversed the ocean for thousands of years, exploring and settling the islands found throughout the Pacific region. The cultural and linguistic diversity of Pacific Islanders is evidence of this rich history of migration that ties the region together.

Through the Compacts of Free Association agreements between the United States and three Pacific nations--the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau--more families over the past several decades have moved from the islands to pursue education, work, and healthcare in the continental United States, Hawai'i, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The goal of this infographic series is to facilitate greater awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the diversity of cultures and experiences of Pacific Islanders and provide tangible methods for educators to meaningfully engage with Pacific students' communities inside and outside of the classroom.

The five infographics in this series include:

  • Infographic #1: What are the Freely Associated States of the Pacific?
  • Infographic #2: Why Do Student Names Matter?
  • Infographic #3: What is School Like?
  • Infographic #4: Why Do Students' Languages Matter?
  • Infographic #5: Using Data to Inform Practice
