Summary

REL Northwest has created customizable professional development modules that school district facilitators can use to prepare middle and high school teachers in using remote learning resources and building social and emotional learning skills in a hybrid or in-person learning environment. These modules draw on evidence-based resources about teaching and learning in a remote environment that were produced by researchers from a network of 10 Regional Educational Laboratories (RELs) funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences.

The modules are designed for use as a single 90-minute professional development experience or as two 45-minute training sessions--one for each topic. Each topic includes content presentations and breakout activities to help participants explore and practice using the materials. Facilitators can choose to cover a single topic or both.

Harnessing remote learning tools for in-person instruction

This module synthesizes REL resources designed to assist educators in delivering virtual lessons, many of which can be easily adapted to supplement traditional classroom instruction. This module supports teachers in harnessing remote learning tools and strategies in tandem with in-person instruction to complement classwork or remediate identified skill gaps.

Social and emotional learning (SEL)

This module synthesizes evidence-based information from REL resources to help educators promote social and emotional learning instruction for students while also considering their own needs and emotional well-being.
