Trauma-Engaged Practice Briefs: Evidence and Implementation

REL Northwest
Publication date:
October 2024

Summary

REL Northwest developed a set of briefs that summarize research about trauma-engaged practices and outline implementation considerations for K-12 educators and school and district leaders. The briefs provide the evidence base for key practices that appear in the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development's (AK DEED's) Transforming Schools: Trauma-Engaged Toolkit. Educators and policymakers can explore these evidence-based practices to support students impacted by trauma:

  1. Social and emotional learning and behavioral skills development
  2. Developing positive relationships
  3. Peer-to-peer support groups
  4. Implementing student support teams
  5. Using restorative practices or a trauma-engaged approach to discipline
  6. Cultural integration and family partnerships
  7. Improving staff understanding of ACEs, stress, and trauma
  8. Maintaining a safe and welcoming physical school environment
  9. Self-care
  10. Using campus and district climate data to align policies and practices with cultural and community values
  11. Cell phone policy
  12. Community-building restorative circles
  13. Community partnerships
  14. Assessing policies
  15. Planning and coordination of schoolwide efforts
  16. Monitoring implementation
  17. Advisory programs
  18. Positive behavioral interventions and supports

REL Northwest compiled these briefs in response to AK DEED's request for evidence-based research that supports and increases understanding of trauma-engaged practices in the state's Transforming Schools framework and toolkit. With this research, AK DEED hopes to improve the ability of Alaska Alternative Schools staff to identify and implement promising trauma-engaged practices to improve outcomes for students.
