Summary

This is the first session of the four-part Developing Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms series, designed to help educators understand and implement evidence-based practices to support students and educators experiencing trauma. This session provides an introduction to trauma and its impact in schools. After reviewing the session video and exploring the session resources, educators will have increased understanding of:

  • What trauma is and the negative impacts of trauma on the brain and body.
  • Students' behavioral, social-emotional, and academic difficulties that may result from trauma that educators can observe in school settings.
  • Multi-tiered approaches to addressing trauma and relevant strategies and practices to support students.
  • The importance of taking whole-school trauma-sensitive approaches to support all students and educators.

This series was originally developed with and delivered to educators and administrators in Marshall County Schools, Kentucky. These materials were used in the second year of the project.
