Developing Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms Session 3: Creating a Trauma-Sensitive School Environment and Classroom

This is the third session of the four-part Developing Trauma-Sensitive Classrooms series, designed to help educators understand and implement evidence-based practices to support students and educators experiencing trauma. This session describes practices for creating a trauma-sensitive school environment and classroom. After reviewing the session video and exploring the session resources, educators will have increased understanding of:

• Creating safe, predictable, and transparent classroom environments.
• Using positive behavior supports and social-emotional learning to strengthen students' self-regulation, social competence, and self-esteem.
• Building awareness of students' strengths and needs and referral resources.
• Implementing these strategies while being attentive to cultural, historical, and identity issues and trauma-sensitive disciplinary practices.

This series was originally developed with and delivered to educators and administrators in Marshall County Schools, Kentucky. These materials were used in the second year of the project.
