Summary

This REL Mid-Atlantic workshop will consolidate and disseminate evidence on best practices for communicating school performance data to parents, taxpayers, educators, and other stakeholders through online school report cards. This workshop will focus on three themes: (1) content, (2) design, and (3) process. Content refers to potential domains to include--academic performance, socio-emotional learning, school climate, curricular offerings, extracurricular offerings, student body description, faculty credentials, commuting and transportation options, and so on. The design of online report cards refers to the amount of information, the language used to present it to parents, the use of colors, graphical representation of quantitative information, use of glossaries and explainers, location of content on the page, default sort order, and site functionality. Process refers to the methods by which state agencies gather community input for the initial design or iterative improvement and gather user experience data in an ongoing way to improve the site over time after its initial launch.
