Summary

This virtual workshop, What Research Tells Us About Reducing Chronic Absenteeism: A Webinar for the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), enables participants to better understand chronic absenteeism, its prevalence and use as an accountability measure in Pennsylvania, and promising strategies for preventing and reducing it. Presenters introduce chronic absenteeism and discuss its root causes and prevalence nationally and in Pennsylvania. They then provide an overview of how PDE plans to hold schools accountable for chronic absenteeism and describe key components of interventions that have succeeded in reducing chronic absenteeism, as identified through an Ask-a-REL literature search. The workshop concludes with two school- and community-based practitioners sharing their experiences partnering and implementing an intervention identified through the Ask-a-REL and answering audience-submitted questions.
