Creating inclusive workplaces for Black teachers: Recommendations for states and districts

This Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest video explores the importance of staffing Black teachers, the challenges Black teachers face, and four steps education leaders can take in order to determine what strategies will have the biggest influence on creating work environments that are culturally affirming and promote the retention of Black teachers. Experts Dr. Tammie Causey-Konate and Etai Mizrav discuss the roles of data analysis, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement in applying evidence-based strategies to state and district human capital policies and programs. The video also shares the perspectives of educators and district leaders from Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Illinois, on best practices for creating and sustaining inclusive work environments for Black teachers.

REL Midwest also produced a viewing guide that is available for download. The viewing guide prompts viewers to consider what they have learned from the video that can inform their own work. The viewing guide can be used by state and district leaders as they consider how they can develop more inclusive work environments for Black teachers.
