Description: During this time of rapidly shifting conditions for instruction, educators are looking for ways to engage young children in culturally affirming instruction, connect with parents and families, and extend opportunities for learning from books to hands-on activities at school and at home. Join REL West for the first webinar in a series of free events that will share research-based guidance to help PreK–1st grade educators learn a routine for storybook reading, consider the culturally affirming aspects of stories, and hear ideas from elementary principals for creating school-to-home connections. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a Community of Practice follow-up event in February to share their successes and challenges in trying out the storybook routine with their children and families.
Audience: The primary audiences for this event include teachers (preschool, transitional Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and first grade), LEA staff (e.g., instructional coaches, principals, staff developers), and teacher educators.
Speakers: Pamela Spycher, Senior Researcher with REL West
Thea Fabian, principal at Wawona K–8 School in the Fresno Unified School District
Danielle Garegnani, principal at Horton Elementary School in San Diego Unified School District
