Time: 9:00–10:15 a.m. Pacific Time
Location: GEAR UP West Conference, Portland, OR
Description: Newcomer immigrants in U.S. high schools are a diverse group and are often difficult to serve. Some arrive with strong educational backgrounds but with no knowledge of the English language or of American history and culture. Others are refugees with interrupted educations and psychological trauma. All contend with the challenge of adjusting to life in a new country and completing high school graduation requirements, often while learning a new language. This session will focus on the policies, programs, and practices with the most promise for ensuring newcomers access the academic content and language skills necessary to succeed.
Audience: Conference participants working with newcomer immigrant students are encouraged to attend this session.
