Time: 2:30–3:30 p.m. Central Time

Location: Virtual (webinar)

Description: This Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest and REL Southwest webinar will share strategies that schools and districts can use to promote academic success among English learner students. The webinar will include an overview of the findings from the REL Midwest study titled Student and school characteristics associated with academic performance and English language proficiency among English learner students in grades 3–8 in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD). Presenters will discuss key findings from the report, including the finding that more positive student perceptions of school climate on some domains were associated with increased English proficiency ratings and that English learner students attending CMSD’s newcomer academy had more positive perceptions of student climate than English learner students attending other CMSD schools. Practitioner presenters from CMSD and Las Cruces Public Schools in New Mexico also will share reflections on and strategies that schools and districts can use to support English learner student success.
