Description: The goal of the webinar is to expand the knowledge of school and district administrators on incorporating staff feedback in principal evaluation, formally or informally. The webinar will be cohosted by the Maryland Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP), with an intended audience of district officials and principals in the state—but the issues are common across the region and around the country, so we expect the audience will be broader than just Maryland. The webinar will include a brief presentation about teacher survey instruments already used by other districts and states as an input for school leader evaluations, as well as notable research on the characteristics, use, and effects of those instruments. It will describe the results of a recent REL Mid-Atlantic report on the potential role of staff surveys in school leader evaluation in the District of Columbia Public Schools. Then, REL Mid-Atlantic Director Brian Gill will facilitate a panel discussion about incorporating staff input into principal evaluation, including benefits and challenges, with MAESP president Terry Ball and Jesse Papia, Director of Employee Effectiveness at Baltimore City Public Schools, where staff surveys are used as a component of principal evaluation ratings.
Partnership or Research Alliance: Training and Supporting Excellent Educators
Audience: The primary audience for the webinar are district and school officials in Maryland, with a secondary audience of district and school officials around the region and across the country. Invitations will be sent to the REL Mid-Atlantic mailing list and recruited by MAESP. We will also share with the Wallace Foundation, which has done a lot of work in this area (including supporting the use of staff surveys in principal evaluations).
