Using the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) High School Transcript Study (HSTS) 2015 Database for Research and Policy Discussion—DEADLINE May 1, 2015 (HSTS Database Training Seminar) (HSTS Database Training Seminar)

Description:

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), in the U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences (IES), will sponsor 3-day advanced studies seminar on the use of the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) High School Transcript Study (HSTS) database for education research and policy analysis.

The NAEP High School Transcript Study collects transcripts from representative samples of America's public and private high school graduates. The most recent data available is from the 2009 study, conducted in conjunction with grade 12 NAEP in mathematics and science. Previous studies were conducted in 2005, 2000, 1998, 1994, and 1990. Training on the HSTS 2009 will be relevant for researchers and analysts who plan to analyze multiple years of data. The HSTS databases include information on students' coursetaking, credits earned, grade point average, performance on the NAEP assessment, and student and school background characteristics.

PURPOSE AND EXPECTED OUTCOME

The goal of this seminar is to provide education researchers and policy analysts with an opportunity for hands-on experience exploring and analyzing this rich database of secondary student transcript information.   • an overview of HSTS design and database contents;
  • methodological and technical issues that must be taken into account when analyzing NAEP and HSTS data;
