Thomas Wei Attends Qualitative Research Conference

NCEE research scientist Thomas Wei recently attended the second annual "Planning for Qualitative Research: Design, Analysis and Software Integration" conference sponsored by Temple University and Research Talk in Philadelphia, PA. Wei is the project officer on the Study of School Turnaround, a multi-year IES study that will document the change process in 60 case study schools receiving Title I School Improvement Grants. The conference provided training that focused on how best to use software to enhance and facilitate the conduct of qualitative research, including basic instructions on using qualitative data analysis tools such as ATLAS.ti and MAXqda. Other topics covered through a series of interactive workshops included standards for legitimate qualitative research and a multidimensional approach to qualitative research called "Sort & Sift, Think & Shift."
