2010 IES Research Conference

The Institute of Education Sciences (IES) convened the Fifth Annual Research Conference and Poster Exhibition around the theme, Connecting Research, Policy and Practice from Monday, June 28, through Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at the Gaylord National Hotel and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. The conference brought together the largest gathering of grant and contract recipients currently conducting IES-funded education research.

Over 1,200 researchers, policy makers, and practitioners attended. Participants chose from 33 concurrent panel sessions and open forums in the broad topical tracks of Methodology, Teaching and Learning, Social and Behavioral, and Policy. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan delivered remarks at the Opening Plenary, followed by an address by Institute of Education Sciences Director John Q. Easton. Charles Payne, Frank P. Hixon Professor at the University of Chicago gave the Plenary Luncheon Address, Making Research Matter in Urban Schools. Almost 600 researchers participated in one of the most interactive and enjoyable parts of the conference, the annual Poster Presentations.

In addition to the plenary, panel, and poster sessions, the conference agenda included grantee and program meetings, a welcome reception, and was highlighted throughout with many opportunities for dialogue and collaboration. The site for this year's conference, The Gaylord at National Harbor, offered the newest resort destination in the national capital region.
