WWC released reviews of 17 studies that earned evidence tiers

In April, the WWC released reviews of 17 studies that meet WWC standards with or without reservations and reported positive effects on one or more outcome domains, meaning that they were well-designed studies that provide evidence that the interventions improved outcomes.

Strong evidence (Tier 1)

A study of City Connects found positive effects on mathematics and literacy achievement outcomes.

A study of three versions of attendance mailings found positive effects on school attendance outcomes for all three versions.

A study of Strategic Adolescent Reading Intervention (STARI) found positive effects on phonics outcomes.

Moderate evidence (Tier 2)

A study of the Family Engagement Partnership Program found positive effects on general mathematics, school attendance, and student discipline outcomes.

A study of the California school accountability ratings found positive effects on high school completion in progressing in grades 1-12 education outcomes.

A study of Horizons Student Enrichment Program found positive effects on school attendance outcomes.

A study of Proficiency-based Assessment and Reassessment of Learning Outcomes (PARLO) found positive effects on general mathematics achievement outcomes.

Promising evidence (Tier 3)

A study of Accelerate, Complete, Engage (ACE) found positive effects on college degree attainment and progressing in college outcomes.

A study of the Becoming a Man (BAM) and Match tutoring model found positive effects on academic achievement and school attendance outcomes.

A study of solving word problems using text structures found positive effects on general mathematics achievement, reading comprehension, and receptive comprehension outcomes.

Studies of Early Vocabulary Connections and of a supplemental reading instruction program found positive effects on phonics and related alphabetics outcomes; the supplemental instruction program also found positive effects on reading comprehension and reading fluency outcomes.

A study of spatial visualization or form perception training found positive effects on cognition outcomes.

A study of structured teaching and adult guidance for play skills found positive effects on student behavior outcomes.

A study of peer-mediated joint attention found positive effects on prosocial behavior outcomes.

The WWC also reviewed 28 studies that found uncertain effects or did not meet WWC standards.
