American Samoa Partnership for the Improvement of Early Literacy
Focusing on early reading is a priority in American Samoa where many grade 3 students are not reading proficiently, at a time when they should be transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. Our partners in American Samoa are committed to using research results, data, and best practices to guide policy and practice to influence reading outcomes, particularly in multilingual cultures.
Goals
- Identify, explore and test early childhood experiences and predictive factors that relate to third-grade reading outcomes
- Identify malleable factors leading to the current poor early reading outcomes and development and testing of changes to policy and practice that will result in higher student reading outcomes in kindergarten through grade 3
- Increase the prevalence of evidence-based early literacy practices in American Samoa elementary schools
