A REL Midwest Research-Practice Partnership in Illinois

This brown bag session explores how research-practice partnerships can help advance students’ social and emotional learning and features the REL Midwest Early Childhood Education Research Alliance (MECERA). The session highlights how REL Midwest researchers worked with MECERA members to analyze the fall 2017 data from Illinois’ kindergarten entry assessment, the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey (KIDS). Fall 2017 marked the first year KIDS was implemented statewide. The findings include information about children’s social and emotional behaviors at the start of school and the social context surrounding this data collection. Teachers can use the results to inform the content, pacing, and differentiation of instruction, while administrators and policymakers can use the data to examine the variation—or inequalities—in children’s skill levels at the start of school across student subgroups, classrooms, schools, and districts.
