Early Literacy Assessment Coaching: Chicago Public Schools

December 2021

REL Midwest conducted a coaching project with Chicago Public Schools to support a research-based process for reviewing early literacy assessments. This project supported Chicago Public School staff in improving their knowledge of the research on early literacy assessments and the characteristics of high-quality early literacy assessments. As part of the project, REL Midwest supported district staff in developing a research-based project for reviewing and selecting early literacy assessments for use by districts and schools. This work included creating a summary slide with information on the properties essential to consider when determining whether an assessment is appropriate, how to consider the purpose and type of an assessment, how the scores can be used, and how to determine the reliability and validity of assessments.
