In this two-part series, presenters and practitioners will discuss the practical knowledge and leadership skills to begin creating culturally affirming spaces to make schools more safe and supportive environments for culturally, linguistically, and gender-diverse students.

Audience

The target audience for this event series is district and site leaders who are the drivers and stewards of equity-centered efforts in their district. Participants are encouraged to attend in teams of two or more and to register for both webinars if possible.

Webinar 1: Creating Culturally Affirming Spaces: School and Classroom Practices

This webinar will expand knowledge and provide practical, evidence-based examples of systems, policies, and practices that are culturally affirming—what they are and what they are not—to inform instruction, school climate-related practices, and everyday decisions that shape the academic and social-emotional well-being of students and their families.

Participants will:

  • Deepen understanding of culturally affirming school and classroom cultures and climates and how they shape student learning and social and emotional well-being
  • Examine practices, policies, and conditions that hinder student belonging and inhibit the academic and social well-being of culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse students
  • Learn about promising practices and behaviors that foster culturally affirming schooling experiences for students, families, and staff

Webinar 2: Creating Culturally Affirming Spaces: A Systems Orientation

In the second webinar, presenters will expand on how culturally responsive strategies can be used to support academic and social and emotional development and learn about evidence-based systemic leadership approaches and strategies for implementing culturally affirming environments.

Participants will:

  • Deepen understanding of how student and staff outcomes are shaped by a culturally affirming school and classroom climate and how they shape student and staff outcomes
  • Explore systemic approaches for embedding culturally affirming spaces and practices at the school and district level
  • Hear practitioners discuss the leadership practices and adult behaviors that foster culturally affirmative schooling experiences
