Understanding how teachers use student assessment data

Staff at REL West and the Washoe County School District (WCSD) conducted an examination of student achievement and behavioral data that contributed to the development of a risk index containing indicators of when students are at risk of not meeting grade-level standards (elementary school) or not graduating from high school on time (middle and high school).

Representatives of WCSD and of higher education institutions are now part of the Northern Work Group of the Nevada Education Research Alliance and are interested in how the risk indicators are being used.

REL West staff scanned the literature and assisted alliance members to identify and select instruments that could be used or adapted to gather information about teachers’ use of data.
